The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Korea Craft and Design Foundation and Hanbok Advancement Center from Oct. 11-17 will jointly host the fall edition of "Hanbok Culture Week 2021" under the theme "Hanbok suits your life."
Launched in 2018, the event is held every year in the third week of October. Its theme of Hanbok culture is displayed through interactive events, exhibitions and fashion shows.
Last year, a participating local government suffered flood damage and requested a postponement of the event, thus the Hanbok week is being held twice this year, with the previous edition held in spring.
To safely run the event in fall, the number of offline events was minimized, while events such as those in the metaverse (3D online spaces) were arranged so that people abroad could also enjoy Hanbok culture.
The exhibition "K-pop X Hanbok," part of the spring event this year, earned many positive responses. The fall edition will see the exhibition "K-drama X Hanbok" and "Hanbok Garden" at Starfield Coex Mall in Seoul's Gangnam-gu District, featuring the Hanbok seen in movies or TV series fit for the season.
The extended virtual space Naver Zepeto from Oct. 11 will offer interactive content on Hanbok. To promote interest in Hanbok Culture Week, currency (crypto coins) will be offered from Oct. 11-24 that participants can use in the avatar app Zepeto of the web portal Naver.
Online programs merging Hanbok and provincial cultures will be held over the event period in 11 regions, or four more than in the spring event: Busan; Asan, Chungcheongnam-do Province; Namwon, Jeonju and Iksan, Jeollabuk-do Province; Gokseong-gun County, Jeollanam-do Province; Sangju and Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province; Jinju and Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do Province; and Jongno-gu District in Seoul.
Events in the fall event will also take place at ten places abroad, including the Korean Embassy in Sweden, the Korean Cultural Center in London and the King Sejong Institute branch in La Rochelle, France. The interactive events for Hanbok featured at these spots seek to raise awareness of the traditional clothing.
Eleven local governments in Korea arranged events -- mainly online -- due to the pandemic. More information on each region's schedule is on the event's official website: hanbokweek.com.
