A song drawing inspiration from the Korean folk song "Arirang" and cumbia, Latin America's quintessential dance music, has been released on YouTube.

The official music video for "Arirang en Cumbia" premiered on Jan. 22 at the Sheraton Mexico City in Mexico with city officials and the media present.

The song was performed by Colectivo Nacional MX, a Mexican band that won the 2018 Arirang Concour, a contest for the best renditions of the folk tune "Arirang" with a Latin twist. The music video was produced by Hugo Arizmendi of Whiskey Films.

The video begins with a bird's-eye view of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, then transitions to a shot of a Korean pavilion on the grounds of Chapultepec Park in Mexico City.

To the rhythm of "Arirang" and cumbia, the scene shifts to Plaza del Zocalo, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Paseo de la Reforma, the Plaza de la Republica and the campus of National Autonomous University of Mexico, with the musicians performing the song at each location.

The new song was produced by the Korean Embassy and the Korean Cultural Center in Mexico City, and is part of an initiative to spread "Arirang" throughout the world.

The Arirang project took off in 2017 with the song "Arirang Memoire" written by Korean pianist Shin Hyun-joon. The next year, the tune "Cielito Lindo Coreano" arranged by Shin and performed by musicians Horacio Franco on the Mexican recorder and daegeum (bamboo flute) player Gamin was released online.
