President Moon Jae-in on Sept. 14 gave to members of K-pop sensation BTS certificates of appointment as "special envoy for future generations and culture" at Cheong Wa Dae.

Earlier in July, the president had appointed the septet as special envoy to lead international cooperation in global issues given Korea's higher global status.

Cheong Wa Dae Spokesperson Park Kyung-mee said the chief executive after the ceremony thanked BTS, who "gladly" accepted the appointment.

The president said he is grateful to the group in many ways for greatly boosting Korea's dignity by raising the status of K-pop and Korean culture.

BTS member RM said, "As a citizen and individual in Korea, this is a great honor to do something under the title 'special presidential envoy for future generations and culture.'"

"We've always thought how to return the love we received and give more at the same time. We are honored to receive such a great opportunity to do this thanks to the president and will do our best as special envoys."

BTS will begin its duty by accompanying the president to the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The group on Sept. 20 will attend the second meeting of the Sustainable Development Goals Moment, an annual session hosted by the U.N. secretary-general, and deliver a speech with a video of its performance played.
