Korea leads Asia in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index as announced on April 21 by Reporters Without Borders. The countries in white on the map have freedom of the press deemed "good," yellow is "satisfactory," orange "problematic," red "difficult" and  black "very serious."

Korea is the top-ranked country in Asia in freedom of the press according to the 2020 World Press Freedom Index announced on April 21 by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The nation held its position in Asia for the second consecutive year and ranked 42nd overall out of 180 countries surveyed. Its press freedom score was 23.70, down 1.24 points from last year.

"The public health crisis provides authoritarian governments with an opportunity to implement the notorious 'shock doctrine,'" RSF Secretary General Christophe Deloire said.

"For this decisive decade to not be a disastrous one, people of goodwill, whoever they are, must campaign for journalists to be able fulfill their role as society's trusted third parties."

Since 2002, RSF has gauged freedom of the press in 180 countries, with its index based on surveys of non-governmental organizations, journalists and human rights activists on a nation's media activity, the censorship environment and transparency.
