The Ministry of Justice has set up a Plus Friend account on the messaging app Kakao Talk to provide overseas Koreans with information on citizenship registration. (Ministry of Justice)

The Ministry of Justice says ethnic Koreans abroad who have yet to register their Korean citizenship can now do so through the messaging app Kakao Talk.

The ministry on March 7 said it set up in November last year a Plus Friend account with Kakao Talk to provide information on registration of Korean nationality. Plus Friend is a Kakao service geared toward marketing for large businesses and celebrities by helping them connect with their customers or fans on the app.

A user can type in "법무부" (Ministry of Justice) in Kakao Talk to find the ministry's Plus Friend account and add it to his or her friend list. The account gives tips on registering Korean nationality including whether to choose, renounce or maintain it.

A government guide on registering Korean citizenship is also available at the HiKorea website (www.hikorea.go.kr) or by calling the 1345 Immigration Contact Center (if abroad, call +82-1345 or +82-2-6908-1345-6)
