Korean idol groups, like KARA and Girls’ Generation were able to gain popularity in Japan even before appearing in the country for concerts thanks to online social networking. The video for “Hoot” by Girls’ Generation has 10,000,000 views on YouTube and other K-pop hits have also become popular online.

Because people from all over the world can watch music videos and listen to songs online and through social media, more and more fans have been able to find and appreciate Korean music. A Girls Generation fan club in America, called “Soshified,” has about 120,000 members. KARA and other idol groups have their own Facebook pages and Twitter feeds that they update often.

Internet users from around the globe have been able to harness social networking services to spread their love of K-pop, helping to break down traditional barriers. Social network sites are becoming a major tool for spreading the Korean wave and promoting Korean culture.
