The 21st annual Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) will begin the evening of May 28 (Korean Standard Time) under the slogan "Cinema, Liberated and Expressed" with a small opening ceremony at Korea Traditional Culture Center in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province. The event will run through Sept. 20.

The ceremony will be livestreamed online at 8 p.m. on JIFF's official YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/jiffmedia) to viewers all over the world to prevent the further spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

A combined 180 films from 38 countries will be screened during the 116-day festival. Ninety-eight of the selections can be viewed online through June 6 on wavve.com, an online video service platform. Korean feature-length and short films will cost KRW 7,000 each and foreign short films just KRW 2,000.

Other than films in the competition section yet to premiere and others being screened in the form of a long-term showing, 174 of the films will be available for viewing until the festival's last day at theaters on Jeonju Digital Independent Cinema and Cinema Street.

"We decided to prepare to stream live the opening ceremony to announce the start of the Jeonju International Film Festival to film professionals and audiences around the world," said JIFF Lee Joondong.

"Despite the difficult situation due to COVID-19, we want to celebrate this festival, which uses film as its medium, while conveying the meaning of the festival to the fullest."

The schedule of the events to be livestreamed will be in sequence on the festival website (http://www.jeonjufest.kr) as well as on social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
