World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Sept. 7 said Korea is responding well to the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to the lessons it learned from previous outbreaks.

In an online news briefing, he mentioned the COVID-19 situation in countries such as Japan, New Zealand and Korea. "Many of these countries have done well because they learned lessons from previous outbreaks of SARS, MERS, measles, polio, Ebola, flu and other diseases," he said.

"This will not be the last pandemic," he added. "But when the next pandemic comes, the world must be ready – more ready than it was this time."

The director-general urged countries to strengthen their public health systems to prepare for the next pandemic.
